Dr. J. Velmurugan

PROFESSOR

Welcome to the Department of Medical Physics. It is a fairly younger department started in 2011 and was bifurcated from our parent department of Physics. The department is offering M.Sc., Medical Physics, since 1981, Applied Science and Ph.D., Programme are offered. The Post graduate course on Medical Physics was started to provide Medical Physicists Man power to cater the needs of Radiation Oncology and Radiology departments in Medical College & Hospitals. The Medical Physics department is conducting this course in collaboration with Adyar Cancer Institute, Chennai. Post graduation students of our department are examined and certified as Radiological Safety officer to work in Medical Institutions by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Mumbai. Our students are getting employed both in our country and in abroad, in Radiation Oncology departments, in Cancer Hospitals, Radiology department, Nuclear Medicine department and as faculty positions in Medical Colleges. In order to improve the quality, of Medical Physics education and training, to our students, the department has collaboration with the various cancer hospitals and industries. Our alumni are doing great service for our Medical Physics students, in providing professional training and in their project work. In addition department is regularly organizing seminars, conferences, workshops and symposiums. The faculties in the department are actively engaged in research in areas related to application of Physics in Medicine. Currently Dr J Velmurugan is heading the department of Medical Physics. He obtained his, M.Sc., Medical Physics and PhD degree from Anna University. He did his post doctoral research in Cookridge Hospital, Leeds, UK. He has total of 33 years of teaching experience at UG and PG level, in the field of medical physics including 14 years of clinical experience as Medical Physicist and Radiation Safety officer in Kasturba Medical College & Hospital, Manipal, Karnataka.
