Minerals play a vital role in the economic and infrastructure development of a Nation. The Tamil Nadu is one among the mineral rich states in the country and it possess various mineral resources in different parts of the State. The state is possessing the proved Lignite Resources of 8569.31 MT in Neyveli sub basin and 416.61MT of lignite in Pondicherry sub basin with total augmented Lignite Resource of 24693.90 MT in Mannargudi sub basin. Following the Lignite, 638.37 MT of limestone. 61.48 MT of Ilmenite, 40.40 MT of Quartz and Silica sand, 28.43 of Magnesite have been explored successfully in the Non-Metallic Mineral sector. Besides, the State is rich in operating around 1600 numbers of quarries in the Rough stone, Black Granite and Multicoloured Granite sectors. The appointment of technically & statutorily qualified mining engineers will fulfil the legal requirements to operate the quarries and mines under the provisions of the Mines Act 1952 and the MMDR Act, 1957 besides providing the valuable technical inputs to the manufacturers. In this regard, we, the Department of Mining Engineering, is the only Department offer Bachelor degree in Mining Engineering, Masters degree programs in Mining Engineering (M.S by Research) as well as an Engineering PhD program in Mining to satisfy the requirements of producing Graduate Mining Engineers to the States of Kerala, Pondicherry apart from Tamil Nadu. These programs also offer abundant research and educational opportunities for students seeking to continue their studies after obtaining their baccalaureate degree. The faculty members have been recognized by the mining and allied industries as experts in the respective fields and are members of the important decision-making bodies & committees associated with the State Geology and Mining Department, MoEF &CC – SEAC, TAMIN, TANMAG, TANCEM, etc. The Department received generous grants to involve its research in the field of Deep-Sea Mining from NIOT, Chennai.
